Owen Grooms was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama where he was exposed to a very diverse array of musical traditions and began playing mandolin at the age of nine after he was inspired by local traditional musicians. He went on to discover more about Old-Time Stringband music at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC where he learned to play clawhammer banjo and began to perform traditional music. He has gone on to play with many different musicians and groups across Western North Carolina including Broken Rabbit, The John Hardy Party and with members of the Freight Hoppers. He also enjoys teaching traditional music to people of all ages and attending old-time music gatherings.
